New York's Commercial Red Meat Production Up in January

Commercial red meat production for New York totaled 3.7 million pounds in January, up 21 percent from the 3 million pounds produced in January 2016. 

Cattle slaughter totaled 3,000 head, up 7 percent from January 2016. The average live weight was up 14 pounds from the previous year, at 1,210. 

Calf slaughter totaled 5,600 head, up 70 percent from January 2016. The average live weight was down 41 pounds from last year, at 115 pounds. 

Hog slaughter totaled 5,400 head, up 59 percent from January 2016. The average live weight was down 4 pounds from the previous year, at 264 pounds. 

Sheep slaughter totaled 4,400 head, 2 percent above last year. The average live weight was 104 pounds, down 3 pounds from January a year ago.
