Farmers' Market Nutrition Program Benefits Available Now

Farmers' Market Nutrition Program benefits are now available for eligible families and seniors across the state.

The program provides checks to be redeemed at participating farmers' markets and farm stands now through the end of November for the purchase of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

In addition, eligible New Yorkers can use their checks at even more farm stands this year. The number of farm stands participating in the program has nearly doubled in two years, from 40 in 2015 to 77 so far this year.

"Increasing awareness and accessibility to healthy, nutritious food is critical to the health and well being of families across the state," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo. "When New Yorkers eat fresh, local produce, it not only makes for healthier communities, but spurs the state's agricultural industry, creating a stronger New York for all."

Farmers Market Nutrition Program
A total of $6 million in FMNP benefits are available to families through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.

About 250,000 booklets consisting of six $4.00 checks, or a total of $24, will be distributed this year, allowing for the purchase of fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables from over 900 farmers vending at over 600 farmers' markets and farm stands across the state.

Checks are available to eligible families at nearly 400 sites across New York State and at WIC clinic locations. A pocket folder with instructions on how and where to use the checks to purchase fresh, local fruits and vegetables from farmers at the market will be included with each booklet.

Checks can be used at participating farmers' markets and farm stands through November 30 of this year.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program
The $2.5 million Senior FMNP provides checks to eligible individuals age 60 and older to purchase $20 worth of produce. Program benefits are provided on an individual basis instead of per household, also expanding the reach of the program to older New Yorkers.

In upstate communities, checks are now available at county Offices for the Aging.

Eligible recipients must be age 60 or older and meet the income eligibility requirement$1,860 or less per month for a single or $2,504 per month for a couple — or affirm that they are currently receiving or eligible to receive Supplemental Security Income, or public assistance or Section 8 housing subsidy. Recipients cannot have received Farmers' Market Nutrition Program checks from any other location this season.

The Senior and WIC FMNP are administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, in cooperation with the state Office for the Aging and the state Department of Health. The programs are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and New York state. Nutrition education is provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Taste NY, Farmers' Market Open at Long Island Welcome Center

From Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office:

The grand opening of the brand new Long Island Welcome Center in Dix Hills was held Oct. 20.

The 15,200 square foot state-of-the-art Welcome Center includes a Taste NY Market — promoting some of New York’s best locally-made and produced food and beverage products – a farmers’ market and an interactive I LOVE NEW YORK experience for Long Island visitors to learn about the region’s history and tourism destinations.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting at the new facility.
The Welcome Center is located off the Long Island Expressway at Exit 51-52 Eastbound.
The Taste NY Market will showcase a broad selection of fresh made breakfast and lunch items, including soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts using ingredients sourced from Long Island growers.

It will also offer grab-and-go snacks and specialty local items for sale, providing an opportunity for local producers to market their products.

In addition to the Taste NY Market, the Welcome Center will be the home to an outdoor farmers’ market open on Saturdays and Sundays through the season that will provide locally-grown and produced foods to visitors, spotlighting Long Island farms and encouraging agritourism throughout the region.

State Offering Request for Proposals for Farm Market Initiative

The state of New York today announced a $130,000 Request for Proposal for the “FreshConnect” Farmers’ Market program, which assists New York farmers by promoting the sale of locally-grown food products.

The program, in its fourth year, focuses on bringing fresh farm products to nutritionally-underserved communities and improving nutrition education statewide.

This year, the $130,000 Request for Proposal will focus on supporting at least 13 traditional farmers’ market and youth market grant projects across the state. Under this initiative, new and existing farmers' markets, municipalities and nonprofits may apply for up to $10,000, and those with the best ideas on how to improve access to farmers' markets participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be awarded funding.

In addition, $200,000 in "FreshConnect Checks" will be released this year to serve low-income families across the state, including, for the first time, $50,000 directed to veterans of all ages. Checks will be begin being distributed through veterans facilities this summer, based on proximity to eligible farmers' markets.

The “FreshConnect Checks” program encourages the use of SNAP benefits at participating farmers’ markets by providing $2 incentive coupons for every $5 in SNAP benefits.

In 2013, over $3.2 million in SNAP sales occurred at farmers' markets throughout the state. In addition to SNAP, FreshConnect-funded projects aim to ensure that all New Yorkers, regardless of income, have access to fresh fruits and vegetables and are encouraged to accept other nutrition incentives, such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Fruit & Vegetable Checks, Farmers' Market Nutrition Program checks, and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition checks.

Right now, items like rhubarb and asparagus are available and the harvest of strawberries began last week.

Upstate Becoming Must Stop for Food Tourists

Check out  http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20130501/LIVINGHERE/305010005/Upstate-becoming-must-stop-food-tourists this story from the Rochester newspaper.

It reinforces what many people in Central New York have known for ages -- some of the best food on the planet is grown right here.

Where else can you find:

** Wine trails
** A cheese trail
** Farmers markets everywhere
** Beautiful rolling hills and flatlands covered with fields filled with produce and/or animals
** Two of the best ag colleges around and another with a great equine program (Cornell, Morrisville State College and Cazenovia College)
** An area working hard to bring back its first prime crop -- hops
** A county (Oswego) that boasts its own brand -- New York Bold onions.
** Christmas trees, maple syrup and honey made right here.

Should I go on?

Auburn Farmers Co-op Market Moves to New Site June 1

From the Auburn Farmers Co-Op Market Inc.

The Auburn Farmers Co-op Market would like to announce we will be moving to a new location beginning June 1.

The market will now be located at the corner of State Street and Routes 5/20 in the Curley's parking lot. This will allow our customers to enjoy free parking and will allow us to bring in numerous new vendors with new products not sold at the market currently, and allow us to continue to grow the market even more.

We will post more information about these new vendors and products as they commit to the market.

The Auburn Farmers Co-op Market would like to thank all of our dedicated customers and patrons for their support over the years and though our moves. We hope that support continues as we work to improve the market even more this year.
