Oswego County Holiday Farmers Market Dec. 6

From Oswego County Cooperative Extension:

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is putting on its sixth annual Oswego County Holiday Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 as part of the “Christmas in Mexico” festivities. 

Attendees will be able to find great holiday gifts, decorations and food from local farmers. There is no better way to support the local economy than buying local.

In addition to finding local goods, customers have the opportunity to speak directly with the agricultural producers present at the market. This popular event usually draws a large crowd of more than 500 people. 

The Oswego County Holiday Farmers Market will be held at the Mexico VFW at 5930 Scenic Ave. (State Route 3) just north of the village of Mexico. Free coffee and hot chocolate will be provided and Santa Claus will make an appearance.

Oswego County Onion Growers Meeting June 25

Oswego County Onion Growers Twilight Meeting
Wednesday, June 25, 2014 — 5 to 7 pm

Presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County with generous support from: Seedway,   Synagri, Crop Production Service, Stokes Seeds, and Bejo Seed.

This two-hour on-farm meeting will provide crucial, in season research to aid the onion growers of Oswego County in their management decisions to keep them profitable.  The twilight meeting will emphasize strategies to prevent economic loss from problem weeds and bacterial rot damage.

“Strategies to Control Problem Weeds in Onions” Christine Hoepting, Vegetable Specialist - Onions, Cabbage Cornell Vegetable Program will discuss her field experiences utilizing different practices to control problematic weeds in onions, and provide recommendations on integrated pest management strategies for their control.

“Understanding What is Causing Onion Bacterial Rot ” Dr. Steven Beer Cornell University will discuss some of his latest research on onion bacterial rot pathogens and agriculture growing practices that growers can utilize to reduce center rot and sour skin in onions, an expensive issue for growers.

Two New York State Recertification Credits have been approved in categories 1a, 10 & 23, bring your pesticide ID card.  The cost of the program is $10 and dinner will follow.

Program on Improving Farm Websites Set for Feb. 4

A program on how to improve your farm's web presence is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 4 at the SUNY Oswego Phoenix Center, 70 County Route 59, Schroeppel.

The program, titled "Improving Your Farm's Web Presence," will show attendees how to create or improve their web presence for their agriculture business. 

The three main topics that will be covered are: how to create and publish a website, or perhaps improve an existing one; how to interact with social media sites like Facebook or YouTube; and what web applications are out there for farms to connect with buyers.

“Having a web presence is an essential part of marketing in this day and age” stated Lynnette Wright, Agriculture Economic Development Specialist for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Oswego County. She continued “This workshop will help farmers understand how to use social media sites like Facebook, as well the essentials of website design and content.”
